Neighbourhood -> Canal East

An emerging urban village, Canal East is desirable for its immediate proximity to Downtown as well as being bordered by both the Canal and the Rideau River. Also known as Old Ottawa East, the area’s heritage is evident through historical buildings such as the Old Town Hall, Saint Paul University, the Scholasticate and the original St. Patrick College. Canal East’s main artery is Main St which runs from the Canal south to Smyth Road.

Although this has largely been a forgotten section of urban Ottawa, there is momentum to develop both Main St and Hawthorne Ave into more vibrant residential and commercial bases. There is a slow influx of infill developments and a farmers’ market at St. Paul’s University, a natural fit for a health conscious neighbourhood that is home to Singing Pebble Books, 3 Trees, The Wheatberry and The Green Door, Ottawa’s original vegetarian restaurant

Recreational areas aside from the Canal’s pathways include Ballantyne Park across from the Old Town Hall, and Brantwood Park on the Rideau River, where there is currently discussion of installing docks to provide recreational access to the river. Those without a bicycle, rollerblades or skates can rent these and more at Cycos on Hawthorne @ the Canal.
